Control Your Winter Energy Use
Many homes and businesses will be turning up the heat
this winter to maintain comfort levels while the weather
outside is unbearable. With the additional operation of
furnaces and heating systems, energy use is typically
higher throughout the winter. To feel more comfortable
inside this winter and reduce the load on your heating
system, CPW recommends several ways you can improve
heating efficiency. For more information about ways to
conserve, log on to www.greercpw.com. You can also get
tips and advice from your local home improvement store.
The biggest factor that will affect your energy bill this
winter is the thermostat setting. To save energy, keep the
heat as low as possible and wear warmer clothing without
compromising comfort. Be sure to turn the setting down or
off when away from your home or business for long periods
of time. It doesn’t take long for a building to warm up
again. You may choose to invest in an electronic
programmable thermostat. This device will maintain the
heat at different time intervals and warm your house
automatically before you get home.
Another important factor that effects energy efficiency is
insulation. Older homes and buildings may not have ample
insulation in the attic to keep the warm air in and the
cold out. Adding insulation in the attic over living and
working areas may reduce heating and cooling costs as much
as fifteen percent. Though adding insulation may have an
up-front cost, it will provide more comfort and lower
energy bills for years to come.
There are economical ways to save on energy year-round.
Check the seals around doors & windows. Cold air coming in
through these areas can make a room feel drafty.
Inexpensive foam gaskets and window films can be purchased
and installed easily. Make sure the returns for your
heating system are not blocked by curtains, furniture or
appliances. If your water heater is in the garage or in an
unheated closet, it can be wrapped with a fire retardant
insulating blanket from the hardware store.
Be sure to change the furnace filter at least four times a
year. A clogged air filter wastes a lot of heating energy
as well as the electricity to run the blower fan. Use
caution when changing the filter, as many heating units
are in the attic or in crawl spaces. Also check the duct
work around the furnace to make sure there are no leaks or
gaps.Landscaping Near Underground Utilities
- Natural Gas Statement
- You have probably seen or heard in the news about
the increasing price of natural gas due to the gulf
storms this past summer. While it is true that the
natural gas supply and production were impacted, it is
not the only reason that winter utility bills will be
higher. During the winter months, both electric and gas
consumption are greater and this winter is expected to
be colder than last year. It is this combination of
higher energy cost and greater consumer use that will
push the utility bills higher this winter. Greer CPW
encourages our customers to conserve energy this winter
and to take steps now to prepare for the expected bills.
- Payment Convenience
- Paying your utility bill is now easier than ever. We
listened to many great suggestions from our customers
and have developed a new Automated Teller that will
accept credit card transactions over the phone 24 hours
a day, seven days a week. Pay your bill when it’s
convenient for you. Just call 848-5500 and select the
Automated Teller feature.
Customers With Special
Needs
Greer Commission of Public Works is concerned about our
elderly, disabled, or severely dependent customers,
where any interruption, suspension, or other loss of
electric, natural gas, or water service could cause a
potential life-threatening situation in extreme weather
conditions, whether hot or cold. If you feel that you
qualify for this special consideration, please call CPW
at (864) 848-5500. CPW will determine your eligibility
based upon the information you provide to us.
Equal Payment Plan
Protect yourself from the cold chills and high bills of
winter by enrolling in CPW's Equal Payment Plan.
Residential customers can enjoy the benefit of paying
the same amount on their utility bill month after month
so there aren't any surprises when the temperature and
utility use is extreme. The service address must have
history at least through last winter to be eligible and
must have a zero balance prior to enrollment.
For more information about the Equal Payment Plan and
for tips on saving energy this winter, visit us on the
web or call one of our friendly customer service
representatives at 848-5500.
Owned And Led By Our Customers
CPW began serving the citizens of Greer back in 1913.
Our utility was formed by the local residents in order
to provide a reliable and economically efficient source
for water and electricity. Now, over 90 years later,
that commitment still holds true. CPW is led by local
leadership and is accountable only to its customers.
The Board of Commissioners who oversee the financial and
operational aspects of CPW are elected by our citizens
for six year terms. These Commissioners work hard to
make sure that the future of the service to our
customers is planned and protected. They monitor our
operations and strive to maintain the balance of utility
resources, employee satisfaction and customer
confidence. Local leadership and a personal touch, that
is just one more example of how we are Focusing Our
Energy On You.

- Email Billing
Greer CPW is constantly looking for ways to improve our
online services. At the request of our customers, we
have developed an E-Bill program for electronic billing.
E-Bill is an email notification that is sent when the
customer's monthly bill is ready to be viewed online.
CPW's utility bill can be paid online as well. For more
information about our convenient payment programs, or if
you would like to sign up to receive an email
notification when your bill is ready, just log on to
www.greercpw.com and register to pay online, or call one
of our customer service representatives at 848-5500.
Holiday Note
CPW’s Customer Service and Administration facilities
will be closed December 23rd & 26th and January 2nd to
give our employees some time to spend with their
families during the holidays. Standby personnel will be
available in case of an emergency.
