Wastewater treatment facts
Wastewater flows through an extensive network of underground pipes into wastewater treatment plants. Several million liters of wastewater flow through each day at a typical wastewater plant. That is 50 to 100 gallons per person using the system.
The process occurring at a treatment plant is essentially the same type that occurs naturally in a lake or stream. The function of a treatment plant is to speed up the process by which water purifies itself. The process usually consists of two major steps: primary and secondary. The primary treatment process removes such things as sand, rags, sticks and other debris followed by a secondary treatment process using a biological process to break down the wastewater. The treated water is then disinfected before being put back into the rivers and streams.
