We're pleased to present to you this year's Annual
Drinking Water Quality Report. This report is designed
to inform you about the quality of water and services we
deliver to you every day. Our constant goal is to
provide you with a safe and dependable supply of
drinking water. We want you to understand the efforts we
make to continually improve the water treatment process
and protect our water resources. We are committed to
ensuring the quality of your water. Our water source is
beautiful Lake Cunningham along the South Tyger River.
The SC Department of Health and Environmental Control
has completed an evaluation of our drinking water source
and offers it online to interested customers. Our Source
Water Assessment Plan is available for your review at
www.scdhec.gov/water/html/srcewtr.html. If you do not
have internet access, you may review the Assessment Plan
at our administrative office during normal business
hours. Please call (864) 848-5500 to arrange a time.
This report shows our water quality and what it means.
If you have any questions about this report or
concerning your water quality, please contact our Water
Plant Manager at (864) 848-5527. We want our valued
customers to be informed about their water utility. If
you want to learn more, please attend any of our
regularly scheduled meetings. They are typically held on
the fourth Monday of each month. Call our main phone
number (864) 848-5500 to confirm the day and time.
Greer Commission of Public Works routinely monitors for
constituents in your drinking water according to Federal
and State laws. This table shows the results of our
monitoring for the period of January 1st to December
31st, 2005. As water travels over the land and
underground, it can pick up substances or contaminants
such as microbes, inorganic and organic chemicals, and
radioactive substances. All drinking water, including
bottled drinking water, may be reasonably expected to
contain at least small amounts of some constituents.
It's important to remember that the presence of these
constituents does not necessarily pose a health risk.
As you can see by the table, our system had no
violations. We’re proud that your drinking water meets
or exceeds all Federal and State requirements. We have
learned through our monitoring and testing that some
constituents have been detected. The EPA has determined
that your water IS SAFE at these levels.
All sources of drinking water are subject to
potential contamination by substances that are naturally
occurring or man made. These substances can be microbes,
inorganic or organic chemicals and radioactive
substances. All drinking water, including bottled water,
may reasonably be expected to contain at least small
amounts of some contaminants. The presence of
contaminants does not necessarily indicate that the
water poses a health risk. More information about
contaminants and potential health effects can be
obtained by calling the Environmental Protection
Agency’s Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791.
Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in
drinking water than the general population. Immuno-compromised
persons such as persons with cancer undergoing
chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ
transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune system
disorders, some elderly, and infants can be particularly
at risk from infections. These people should seek advice
about drinking water from their health care providers.
EPA/CDC guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the
risk of infection by cryptosporidium and other
microbiological contaminants are available from the Safe
Drinking Water Hotline (800) 426-4791.
Customer Driven
The Commission of Public Works operates a public water
system owned by the citizens of Greer, South Carolina.
CPW has served Greer and the surrounding community since
1914. Our mission is to supply Greer and our customers
in Greenville and Spartanburg Counties with a safe,
abundant supply of drinking water which meets all of the
standards of the United States Environmental Protection
Agency and the South Carolina Department of Health and
Environmental Control.
The Source of Raw Water
CPW draws water from Lake Cunningham and is supplemented
by Lake Robinson located on the South Tyger River in
Northern Greenville County. There is virtually no
industry located above these two reservoirs which cover
1,100 acres with a combined capacity of over five
billion gallons.
Treatment Facility
Raw water is pumped directly from the shore of Lake
Cunningham to CPW's water treatment plant located north
of Greer. Water is treated by applying conventional
methods of chemical mixing, coagulation, flocculation,
sedimentation and filtration. The finished water is then
transferred as needed to our customers through our
distribution system. To facilitate future growth and
better serve our customers, the water treatment plant
recently underwent a construction upgrade and increased
its capacity to be able to produce up to 24 million
gallons per day. The plant will produce more water and
better quality water, meeting all present and future EPA
regulations.
- Distribution Management
- The elaborate distribution system is maintained
by the Water Operations Department. This department
operates and maintains the City’s five elevated
storage tanks, miles and miles of distribution main,
and thousands of customer connections. Water
Department personnel have been certified in Drinking
Water Distribution by State and National industry
associations.
