The Greer Commission of Public Works (CPW) was recently recognized with the Platinum Reliable Public Power Provider (RP3)® designation from the American Public Power Association (APPA) for providing reliable and safe electric service.

Greer CPW’s Electric Operations Manager Tony Farr accepted the award during the Association’s annual Engineering and Operations Technical Conference in San Antonio, Texas May 8, 2017.

“We’re honored to be recognized as a reliable public power provider and appreciate the American Public Power Association recognizing our commitment,” said Mike Richard, CPW General Manager. “Our staff, under the guidance of Electric Operations Manager Tony Farr, works diligently to provide reliable service to our customers who we so proudly serve.”

The RP3 designation, which lasts for three years, recognizes public power utilities that demonstrate proficiency in four key disciplines: reliability, safety, workforce development and system improvement. Criteria includes sound business practices and a utility-wide commitment to safe and reliable delivery of electricity.

“We strive to set the bar high in all areas of our service and will continue to be the utility that is used as an example of excellence nationwide, said Perry J. Williams, CPW Chairman. An RP3 designation means Greer CPW is among the elite in the country and shows our commitment to keeping costs as low as possible and our employees safe, “ said Williams.

“Utilities that have earned an RP3 designation demonstrate public power’s emphasis on achieving leading practices and providing a high level of service to communities,” said David Lynch, Chair of the Association’s RP3 Review Panel. “We are proud to welcome all utilities earning this recognition for the first time and to those renewing their designations.”

2016 was a banner year for CPW electric with the completion of the downtown Greer LED lighting project and providing mutual aid to utility companies during Hurricane Matthew. Out of a possible 100 score from APPA, Greer CPW rated 93.5 and the 26-page application was reviewed by a panel of industry judges.

“We hope this award shows our dedication to helping Greer grow in a positive manner. We continue to see a 3% increase in growth among all our utilities and always want to provide a reliable service to our customers,” said Richard.

Greer CPW joins more than 220 public power utilities nationwide that hold the RP3 designation which first began for the APPA 12 years ago. The award for CPW will stand from 2017-2020.
