Greer CPW and the Greer Police Department are once again partnering to help safely remove unwanted and expired medications from the community through National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

“This event may only last a few hours, but it has one of the greatest year-round impacts,” said Captain Chris Forrester with the Greer Police Department.

The public is invited to bring expired, unused, or unwanted medications — no questions asked — to Greer CPW’s Customer Service Complex, located at 301 McCall Street, Greer SC 29650, on Saturday, October 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This local event coincides with the annual National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, a nationwide initiative led by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in partnership with law enforcement agencies, pharmacies, and community organizations across the country.  This marks the 10th year that Greer CPW and the Greer Police Department have partnered on the event. Together, the organizations have collected more than 1,500 pounds of unwanted and expired medications for safe disposal.

“Medications that are flushed or improperly discarded can enter our waterways and wastewater systems, where they cannot always be completely removed,” said Alison Rauch, Greer CPW Public Information Coordinator. “Proper disposal helps protect our drinking water sources and the environment for future generations.”

Participants may bring unwanted or expired prescription medications, over-the-counter medications, and pet medications, including pills and patches. Please do not bring sharps or liquid medications. Participation is open to everyone; you do not have to be a Greer CPW customer to take part.

For those unable to attend, permanent drug drop boxes are available 24/7 at both the Greer Police Department and Greer Memorial Hospital.
